Polish Supreme Audit Office took over its duties as external auditor of the Council of Europe during a ceremony held yesterday in Strasbourg.

The agreement was signed in Strasbourg on 22 October 2014 by the Supreme Audit Office’s President, Krzysztof Kwiatkowski and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland. The ceremony in the Council of Europe followed official transmission of the mandate from the outgoing External Auditor – French Cour des Comptes, which took place in the alsacian branch of the French Auditor in the presence of Krzysztof Kwiatkowski and Didier Migaud, the President of Cour des Comptes.

NIK was appointed external auditor of the Council of Europe in December 2013 by the member states of the organisation. It will hold this function for the next five years. NIK will audit the CoE’s financial reports and accounts to see whether they present a true and fair view, and whether they comply with applicable regulations; it will also check internal audits and other aspects, e.g. financial procedures for their cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

Previously external auditors of the Council of Europe were Supreme Audit Institutions of France and the United Kingdom.
