    On 17 November 2008 Poland ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.


    The Convention was opened for signature on 16 May 2005, during the Third Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe in Warsaw. It has been in force since 1 February 2008. The Convention constitutes the first European treaty in this field. It focuses on the protection of victims of trafficking and the safeguard of their rights. It also aims at prevention of trafficking and prosecution of traffickers. In addition, the Convention provides for an independent monitoring mechanism capable of controlling the implementation of the obligations contained in the Convention by States Parties. 


    The Convention entered into force in respect of Poland on 1 March 2009.
