  •  The Council of Europe is set to elect its new Secretary General in June 2009. The Polish Government has decided to submit the candidature of Senator Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz for the post.

    Mr Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, former Prime Minister, Speaker of the Sejm, Minister of Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs, for a number of years represented the Sejm at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. During the Polish Presidency of the Council of Europe he chaired its Committee of Ministers. His political experience and involvement in the two decades of Polish transformation as well as thorough knowledge of European issues make him particularly qualified for this post.

    Guided by these considerations, after obtaining Senator Cimoszewicz's consent, the Government has instructed the Permanent Representative of Poland to the Council of Europe to officially submit his candidature.

    Visit by Senator Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz to the Council of Europe
    during the June part-session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the CoE
    (21-23 June 2009)

    On 21-23 June 2009 Senator Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz visited the Council of Europe during the June part-session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. During his visit, the Candidate for the post of Secretary General participated in a meeting of the Socialist Group (SOC) that was devoted to the report on the Russian Federation. The Senator delivered a speech on that occasion.

    The programme of the visit included also meetings with national delegations to the Parliamentary Assembly of Poland as well as of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

    During his stay in Strasbourg on the occasion the PACE session W. Cimoszewicz participated in a series of meetings in the framework of the ongoing election campaign for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

    Senator met with three PACE's political fractions and numerous national delegations to the Assembly. He also held bilateral meetings, inter alia, with the President of the PACE L. M de Puig and the head of the Socialist Group A. Gross. On 29 April, a reception in honor of Senator was offered by the Permanent Representative of Poland to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski. The reception was attended by parliamentarians to PACE and members of the diplomatic corps.>>>

    at meeting of Ministers' Deputies 

    On April 15 2009, Senator Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz  took part in a meeting of the Ministers' Deputies in Strasburg, during which interviews were held with all four  candidates to the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe. Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz explained why he had  agreed to be a candidate  and presented his election platform,  detailing his vision of the Council of Europe as  a Pan-European  institution based on values and solidarity. For an hour the candidate replied to questions concerning specific aspects of the Council's activity. >>>

    On the occasion of his visit to Strasbourg, Senator Cimoszewicz met also Thomas Hammarberg, the CoE Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as Ulrich Bohner, Secretary General of the CoE Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.

    On 24 March 2009 Senator Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz visited the Council of Europe.

    During the visit, the candidate for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe met Ms Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General of the Organisation, as well as Mr Mateo Sorinas-Balfegó, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. >>>
