The exhibition ‘Berlin-Yogyakarta’, organised by the Polish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in cooperation with Permanent Representation of Poland, was opened on 8 April 2014.

The aim of this project is to tell the story of persecution of gay, bisexual and transgender people by the Nazi regime in Europe and to underline that human rights are inalienable to all people, non-heterosexual including.

The title of this exhibition consists of two names of cities from two different continents, highlighting global scale of the phenomenon of exclusion as well as universal scale of human rights. The current part of the exhibition is linked to Yogyakarta and the historical part is connected to Berlin.  It shows the origins and achievements of the movement for emancipation of LGBT people and the history of their persecution by the Nazis.

The exhibition was opened by Robert Biedroń, Parliamentary Assembly’s General Rapporteur on the rights of LGBT people, Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe and Gisela Wurm, Chair of the PACE’s Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination.

‘The opening of Berlin-Yogyakarta exhibition in the Council of Europe by Polish delegation is a big step for Central and Eastern European countries towards society more open and tolerant towards non-heterosexual people.

The exhibition was displayed in the Council of Europe during the second part-session of the Parliamentary Assembly on 7-11 April 2014. Exhibition was complemented by the screening of a documental movie ‘Paragraph 175’, which took place in the seat of the Polish Permanent Representation.
