The Council of Europe’s role in the face of challenges the deepening migrant crisis and the conflict in eastern Ukraine pose for Europe was top of the agenda during Minister Grzegorz Schetyna’s meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland.

“Poland has always been a steadfast advocate for European solidarity, and this is also the case in the ongoing migrant crisis. We are ready to act together and take on our part of responsibility, especially given the humanitarian crisis we are witnessing,” underscored Poland’s top diplomat.

The interlocutors agreed about the need to come up with a consistent European vision, and a comprehensive, long-term approach to the unfolding migrant crisis. Minister Schetyna pointed out that Member States’ actions should be guided by the principle of responsibility, and respect for the human rights and dignity of migrants.

At the meeting, Minister Grzegorz Schetyna also discussed current developments in eastern Ukraine, and the Council of Europe’s contribution to ensuring stability, security and peace in the region. “Poland is especially grateful for the Council of Europe’s technical and expert assistance to Ukraine. We are of one mind that a modern democratic system needs the rule of law and robust anti-corruption mechanisms,” said the Polish foreign policy chief.

Moreover, the meeting covered the conclusions reached in the Secretary General’s report on the state of human rights and the rule of law in Europe. The report gives an analysis of problems in areas that are key to ensuring the so-called democratic security. The minister and the secretary general agreed that democratic security is a shared responsibility of states – not only Council of Europe member states, but also their neighbours. For Europe will not be safe without democratic and stable neighbours. As Minister Schetyna added, “we take notice of the significant role the Council of Europe plays in development and ensuring democratic security not only in Ukraine, but in other European countries as well.”
